The Confused Programmer
When we start learning programming, we have a thousand questions in our mind and it is normal because the thing is new to us. But the problem is in searching for answers, asking ten people we get ten answers. Some say learn C first, some say learn PHP and get into outsourcing, some say learn algorithms and do programming contests. But what do we actually do?
The purpose of this writing is not to confuse you with advice, but to help clear up the confusion and share some of my own experiences.
A few days ago, I was reading some articles on the question-answer website Quora, the topic of which was that learning programming has become more difficult or easier than before? In one way of thinking, it’s definitely easier than ever. Once programming languages were not that advanced, learning low-level languages required a lot of effort, compared to learning Python or C++ today is very easy.
There are also many visual languages out there to teach kids programming. Today’s IDEs are also so smart that they teach you not to make mistakes.
Now, if you search any topic on the internet, thousands of resources come up. I think about the Bengali language, even 5 years ago there was not much good writing in Bengali about algorithms and programming contests, now many people are writing beautifully and easily difficult topics in Bengali!
But just as the internet has made learning programming easier, it has also made it much harder! Now we cannot decide what to learn because of the different opinions of many monks, they taught distant things.

When I first learned programming in the Qbasic language, I didn’t know much about programming. There are thousands of languages in the world, each one has different advantages, I was completely ignorant about them, I just knew some words like QBasic, Visual Basic, and knew that there is a very difficult language called C that adults learn! I used to go to internet cafes and download a tutorial and compiler of CubeSic and try to learn by myself. There was no one to introduce me to coding and guide me by writing these types of codes for mini calculators, base converters by myself.
Then after the HSC exam and before the entrance exam I came to know from an elder brother that learning C is not very difficult and everyone starts learning programming with C. Then I got a thick C book from Deitel and started learning. At that time I had internet but the usage was very limited. I learned all the basic knowledge of C from Deitel’s book, sometimes I took the help of that elder brother.
Then I was confused about C and C++ (is there one that isn’t?), which one should I learn first? Later, when I heard that after learning one language, learning the rest is not that difficult, the real task is to learn to think “like programmers”, then without worrying about that, I didn’t take anything except Deitel’s C book and a couple of reference sites on the Internet.
Now I have many resources, know more than before, but now when I try to learn something new, I get confused. There are a thousand frameworks around (Javascript framework birth rate is thought to match the birth rate of Bangladesh), ten different database tools, ten thousand different opinions on ten different languages.
I learned Ruby on Rails while working at HackerRank, then I learned that Ruby on Rails has thousands of problems, Ruby developers will starve to death after a few days, I learned backbone.js, then I heard that only spineless engineers use backbone, today’s engineers use React.js . Working with Java here at Traveloka.com, but once I myself had a problem with Java!
